Getting Ready for Hardwood Refinishing: A Room-by-Room Checklist

The smoothest floor-refinishing projects start before the sanding equipment arrives. The goal is to give the crew a clear workspace and give your household a workable plan. A few decisions made ahead of time can prevent rushed moving, missed belongings, and confusion about when rooms are usable again.

Walk every room included in the estimate

Check closets, pantry floors, hallways, and doorway transitions. Agree on the stopping points and identify anything that stays in place. Do not assume a closet or a connected landing is included simply because it has the same wood. Mark those areas on a simple room sketch and keep it with the estimate.

Assign the moving responsibilities

Decide who moves beds, appliances, pianos, and fragile items. Empty drawers and cabinets if moving them requires it. Choose a storage space that does not block the crew’s route or trap something you will need during the project. Ask about appliance connections and whether another qualified trade is needed.

Make a household access plan

Think through the route to bedrooms, bathrooms, and exterior doors. Plan separately for children and pets. A closed doorway may need more than a verbal reminder, and a pet cannot understand that a new coating needs protection. Arrange meals and essential belongings around the rooms being worked on.

Get the finish instructions in writing

Ask when light foot traffic, furniture, rugs, and routine cleaning are allowed. Those are separate milestones, and they depend on the selected finish and actual conditions. Confirm whether the home’s heating or cooling should remain at a particular setting during the work.

The day-before check

Remove small objects, confirm entry arrangements, photograph any existing damage you want discussed, and make sure the selected stain or natural finish is documented. Share concerns before the work starts rather than waiting until the last coat. Your preparation helps the team focus on delivering a consistent finished floor.
