Wide-Plank Hardwood: The Questions to Ask Before Ordering
Wide boards can give a room an open, calm appearance, but a flooring purchase should include more than the look of the sample. The product, building conditions, and installation plan need to work together. Ask these questions before ordering material for your Minnesota home.
Which product fits this location?
Discuss whether the room is above grade, on a concrete slab, or below grade. Identify the exact solid or engineered product and review its installation instructions. A broad description such as “wide oak” is not enough to determine the correct method for every house.
What preparation is included?
Ask how the substrate will be evaluated, what moisture testing is planned, and how needed preparation will be priced. If the existing floor must first be removed, clarify how concealed conditions will be handled. A beautiful board cannot compensate for an unsuitable base.
How will the floor be installed?
The fastening or adhesive method should follow the requirements of the selected flooring system. Discuss glue assistance when it is part of the proposed installation. Ask the estimator to distinguish material cost from adhesive, preparation, trim, and labor so you can compare the complete scope.
What will the layout look like?
Look at board direction, long sightlines, narrow hallways, and transitions into other floors. Review a group of boards to understand color and grain variation. One perfect sample does not show the full range that may arrive in the order.
What happens after installation?
Request the product’s environmental and care guidance and keep the installation records with your home paperwork. If the wood will be finished on site, confirm the color decision and return-to-use plan as well. These conversations make the project easier to understand before the material reaches your driveway.
